CPSA Certificates of Conformity

The Consumer Product Safety Act ("CPSA") at § 14(a), as amended by § 102(a) of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 ("CPSIA"), requires that, for products manufactured on or after November 12, 2008, manufacturers (including importers) certify that the products comply with all applicable CPSA consumer product safety rules and similar rules, bans, standards and regulations under any other law administered by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (the "Commission") by issuing a certificate of conformity. Product Safety
BIC products comply with all relevant sections of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act as specified in 16 CFR Part 1500 and with the heavy metals requirements set forth in: 16 CFR 1303 (total lead), 91/338/EEC (total cadmium), EN 71-3 (soluble heavy metals), and ASTM F963 (soluble heavy metals). In addition, BIC complies with the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), California Proposition 65, MAK List (Germany), and Directive 2002/61/CE. BIC products are also free of Class I and II Ozone Depleting Substances and natural rubber latex.

Additionally, each BIC ink undergoes a toxicological review by Duke University under the WIMA (Writing Instrument Manufacturer's Association) certification program. This review considers both the acute health effects (from skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation) and the chronic health effects of BIC inks before we place them on the market. Duke University bases its review on the guidelines set forth by the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and in this way confirms the compliance of BIC inks with ASTM D-4236.

BIC makes every effort to ensure the safety of its products, however, we ask our consumers to use our products as they are intended to be used.
